The conflict is shaped by two key factors: the relentless pursuit of economic rents in a resource-rich region and significant inequalities in public investment, both of which fuel political violence and social unrest.

Sahelian states such as Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso now pursue two main strategies: confrontation with insurgent groups and growing tensions within their own societies, on the one hand, and increasing international isolation, on the other, accompanied by new bilateral alliances and the adoption of a neo-progressive approach to development.
